Funding

1.     Update

Update a current OER by creating a New Edition of the resource; faculty are eligible for this award every three years.
  • $750 for each team member
  • Maximum award amount: $1,500 total per course   
  • Estimated completion time 3-9 months

2.    Adopt

 

Adopt existing OER textbooks or other OER resources by curating current OER collections available and/or surveying or securing department support for adoption.
  • $750 for each team member
  • Maximum award amount: $1,500 total per course   
  • Estimated completion time 3-9 months

3.     Remix

Remix existing OER textbooks or other OER resources; developers may add some original content, but creation is minimal (a good measure is less than 20 percent of the content).
  • $1,300 for each team member 
  • Maximum award amount: $3,900 total per course
  • Estimated completion time 6-15 months

4. Create

Create a substantially new resource by combining existing OER textbooks or other OER resources and creating a significant portion of original content (a good measure is more than 20 percent of the content).
  • $2,500 for each team member 
  • Maximum award amount: $7,500 total per course
  • Estimated completion time 1-2 years

 

Procedure

Faculty interested in applying for OER funds should plan to do the following:

  1. View online resources about OER to gain background information. Good options include: CreativeCommons.org, HACC OER Libguide.
  2. View recordings of CITE sessions:

  5. Obtain support from academic department to undertake the project.
  6. Complete the online OER application.
  7. Once approved, adopt, adapt or create a textbook or materials for one or more classes that aligns with course outcomes.
  8. Reach out to OER Committee for guidance or with any questions
  9. Circulate a survey (provided by the OER committee) to students prior to incorporating OER and then the following semester after incorporating OER. 
  10. Please note that as per a special agreement with the Provost, faculty will retain full copyright to deliverables created as part of this award. Faculty will then relinquish some rights by assigning a Creative Commons license to their material.
  11. License materials with an appropriate Creative Commons license (CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, CC-BY-NC, CC-BY-NC-SA) and upload to a designated repository, which will be identified by the OER Committee.
  12. If adopting, remixing or creating a textbook, present to your department to request the addition of the textbook to the 335 form.

Prepare: What Faculty Will Need to Apply

 

  • Name and contact information for all project collaborators
  • Course number the OER will apply to
  • A clear plan to adopt, remix or create 
  • Typical enrollment in the course per semester
  • Number of sections of the course typically offered per semester
  • Number of sections of the course typically offered by the entire department per semester
  • Titles and costs of texts and materials currently used
  • Estimated cost savings per student in the course
  • Knowledge of open textbooks available on the curricular topics
  • Rationale for development of the OER: In 750 words or less, explain why you’ve chosen this class for OER adoption, adaptation, or creation and what potential impacts the OER will have on student success (especially for underrepresented populations).
