What specific OER are you currently using? FS 100 College Success; FS 102 Introduction to the College Experience; FS 101 Career Development and Decision-making Why did you decide to make the switch to OER? Ability to tailor content to the HACC student experience; no costs for the students Describe other strategies you have used or are currently using to minimize the cost of materials for students Used inclusive access with Macmillan in the past to reduce textbook cost by over 50% How are you using OER in your classroom? As the text for assigned reading; showing OER content in lieu of PowerPoint slides; discussing the included student scenarios; using the videos linked in the OER in class. Where there any challenges to using OER, as compared to traditionally published materials? Some students have struggled with saving the URL to their favorites and then forgetting where to find the OER link in my Brightspace courses (planning to add a widget on the course home page in future semesters). Some students aren't comfortable with a completely online resource and have received printouts from the Bookstore. What is your students’ feedback on the OER you have used? They like that the text is free, and some have expressed appreciation that they will be able to access the text in the future after the class ends since the OER is a web-based resource. I also asked my FS 101 students for specific feedback about chapter content in their first three quizzes and have or will update/revise the content based on their feedback. What differences have you noticed in student learning, grades, or engagement when you used OER? Since my quizzes are open-book, and I encourage students to have the OER open when taking quizzes, I've heard from students they are engaging with the OER when taking quizzes. Even though I purposely didn't announce this fact, some students have figured out that many of the FS 100/102 quiz questions are repeated from the chapter reviews in the OER. I also think students have appreciated taking notes in class on the OER instead of separate PowerPoints (just one resource to review instead of two). What advice do you have for colleagues who are interested in implementing OER in their teaching? Co-authoring the three OERs I use was a wonderful experience. I was challenged to think about how students would use the OER, learned from my HACC colleagues and other OER authors when we adapted some material and experienced a deep satisfaction upon completion of each resource. |
