ENGL 203: American Literature I
ENGL 207: Introduction to Literature

What specific OER are you currently using?

ENGL101 - "English Composition (Woodring)" Previously, I used a variety of books, the most recent being "The Working Writer" (Fulwiler).

ENGL102 - "How Arguments Work: A Guide to Reading, Writing and Analyzing Texts in College (Woodring)". Previously I used "Everything's an Argument," and before that "Subject and Strategy"

Have you used strategies, other than using OER in your teaching, to minimize the cost of course materials for your students?

Absolutely! I no longer recommend the Diana Hacker Pocket Style manual, which I love, and instead really push the HACC libguides within my course and promote direct instruction and include writing handbooks within my OERs That way, if a student is told they have problems with subject-verb agreement (or any other common writing error), they are given corrections within their writing and pointed to where to find more information about the issue.

In Early American Literature (pre 1865), I have never required an anthology, as they are costly and limit what literature students are reading. Instead, because everything is in the public domain, I provide all the readings and information about the authors/time periods through additional readings and videos on demand from the library.

How are you implementing OER in your teaching?

My OERs have replaced my textbooks.

Where do you find quality OER? For the OER you are using what made you decide to pick that one?

I scoured the internet, and found OERs on a wide variety of educational websites. The ones I selected not only covered the content that I needed, but did so in a way that was accessible and relevant to students. Many of them provided examples to help illustrate, and I'm working to add my own this summer as well. .

Where there any barriers to using OER, as compared to traditionally published materials, which you had to overcome?

No - just time to find and remix what I wanted.

Are you glad you made the switch?

Yes

What is your students’ feedback on the OER you have used?

Many students are very thankful that the text is free, and I receive that comment often - in office hours, in surveys, and in discussions. Some students prefer a traditional printed text, but if they ask (or pay attention to the syllabus), the text can be printed for them by the bookstore and mailed to them. I've only had a few students and 1 advisee who have done this.

Have you noticed a difference in student learning, grades, or engagement when you have used OER?

No

Do you have any advice for colleagues who are interested in implementing OER in their teaching?

I highly encourage it!
