What specific OER are you currently using?

World History, Culture, States, and Societies to 1500. I have used many textbooks in the past teaching World I. I decided to switch because the OER is free, not bad as a book, we can change it, and students will be more likely to use it.

Have you used strategies, other than using OER in your teaching, to minimize the cost of course materials for your students?

Went from a Cengage to an Oxford text. Cut the cost in half. However, now we have removed the cost. And an obstacle to student success.

How are you implementing OER in your teaching?

Use link to the book. Students are divided into groups to answer questions from the book at times, we also pull about 20% of our exams from the book. Material not explored in class generally.

Where do you find quality OER? For the OER you are using what made you decide to pick that one?

Libretexts. There were not a lot of options for World I texts. This was a bit of a surprise. The OER selected already included the units that I explore in my classes. Some adopting it was not that difficult.

Where there any barriers to using OER, as compared to traditionally published materials, which you had to overcome?

I do not really think so. Without a print copy it is hard to have the experience of everyone opening to a specific page and working through something as a group remotely.

Are you glad you made the switch?

Yes

What is your students’ feedback on the OER you have used?

First semester using it. Just reaching the halfway point of the semester. I have not really asked for their feedback as of yet. However, based on out first exams, students have been reading the text. I think this will continue. They see that they will be tested on it, and this encourages reading.

Have you noticed a difference in student learning, grades, or engagement when you have used OER?

Not specifically as of yet. I think it will promote more equity in terms of engagement.

Do you have any advice for colleagues who are interested in implementing OER in their teaching?

Do it. Consult with others. Go slow if needed. HACC has great resources here!

Is there anything else you would like to add about OER?

It has been a rewarding experience and one that is really student centered.
