ENGL 057 - Critical Connections in Reading and Writing - Allen-Gleed

6. Share Ideas

When you are writing a paper, creating a presentation, or creating any other kind of academic work, you are sharing ideas and participating in the conversation around the topic. You have to let your audience know if it is your idea or the idea of someone else. You do this through:

  1. Identifying what ideas belong to others.
  2. Ensuring that the idea is identified within the work as belonging to someone else.
  3. Letting others know all the information they need to find that idea for themselves.

This process is called "citing" and there are "rules" about how you should do this. For this class, you will be following the MLA set of rules.
