Finding Industry Information

  1. Go to Hoovers Online. 
  2. Search for your company in the search box in the main search box at the top, e.g.: Starbucks Corporation.
  3. Click on your company's top result, and you will be brought to the Company Summary page. 

     
  4. On the Company Summary page, find the Industry section.
  5. Note your company's NAICS code (aka, industry code), if you haven't done so already. This will be helpful for your research. 
  6. Click on either the D&B Hoovers Industries link, or the NAICS code link, and you will be brought to the Industry Summary page.

     
  7. Browse the links on the left-hand side of the page to learn more about the industry (Tip: The MarketLine Industry Profiles can be especially helpful). 

     
  1. Go to Business Source Complete.
  2. Enter your company's NAICS (industry) code in the first search box, e.g: 722513
    [Note: Find the NAICS code on the Company Summary page in Hoovers Online, or by Googling your company's name and "NAICS code."]
  3. To the right of the search box, click "Select a Field (optional)" and select: IC NAICS Code or Description.

     
  4. In the Search Options area under Publication Type, select Industry Profile.

     
  5. Click Search. The main industry profile is usually at the top of the results list and contains useful information. Feel free to browse the other results in the list. 
  1. Go to Business (ProQuest).
  2. On the Advanced Search screen under the search boxes, click Show more fields.

     
  3. In the NAICS code search box, type in your company's NAICS (industry) code, e.g: 722513
    [Note: Find the NAICS code by using "Look up NAICS codes" to the right of the search box, via the Company Summary page in Hoovers Online, or by Googling your company's name and "NAICS code."]
  4. Under Document type, check the box next to Industry Reports.

     
  5. Click Search. 
  6. In the left-hand column of the results page under "Source Type," click Reports. 

     
  7. Browse the list of results for relevant industry reports. [Tip: The Plunkett Analytics Reports can be especially helpful.]
