Formatting Tables & Figures in Your Paper

Figure placement

When including tables or figures in your paper, you have two options for placement:

  1. Embed them throughout your paper
  2. Include them each as a separate page at the end of your paper after the references list

Figure elements

However you choose to include your tables and figures, make sure they have the following components:

  • Number -- above the figure, in bold font (e.g., Figure 1)
  • Title -- one double-space below the figure number, italicized in title case (e.g. Framing Scores for Different Reward Sizes)
  • Image -- chart, graph, etc., including axis labels (font sized between 8 and 14 pts.)
  • Legend -- contained within the image, explaining any symbols or colors used
  • Note -- placed below the figure, giving additional explanation or description if necessary. It should be preceded with: Note. (in italics). The note section is also where you should include an APA citation for the figure if you obtained it from another source.
